Hello,
My name is Alaina Hill, and I am writing this to you not to talk about myself (how much excitement could a 15 year old have possibly seen to be writing a letter about it anyway?). No, I am going to write to you today to tell you about my father. Why? Because he could possibly be one of the craziest people you have ever met and he told me to. It started when I was telling him about your sweepstakes to win a trip to Australia, and I was kidding and said, “Boy, maybe we could sign up if you were still enrolled in college.” And he looked at me with that look that he gets when he’s just got what he thinks is a great idea and he said, “Junior, you write to these guys then, tell them my story, tell them why we can’t enter.” So here it goes.
My family has always lived in Iowa, and we were doing just fine. Neither of my parents had ever been to college, but they got decent jobs anyway and everyone was content. However, when I was in third grade or so my dad ruptured a disc in his back. Four years, three surgeries later he had four levels in his back fused and during those four years he endured constant back pain. He lost his job, because he was now disabled, and I think it’s safe to say that it really messed with his head. So he, like other men in the past, turned to drinking. He realized soon though, after an attempt at suicide, that he wasn’t helping his family in anyway, his family nor himself.
Now we skip ahead again, after his back fusion, where he has no job, because he can get no job. Instead he gets a lawyer, and work comp, and all that shit (excuse my language) and while we wait for life to get better he joins a ton of volunteer things around town (PTA and the like for our schools) and even writes a children’s book called Larry the Lunker (rather entertaining book, about a fish). What happened to his drinking you might ask? The same night he tried to die he told us that he was finished and I can swear on my life that he has not drank one drop of alcohol since then.
Finally the work comp goes through, and everything gets better again and they even pay to enroll my dad in community college to become a journalist. My dad has always loved writing, just like I love writing, I probably get it from him. Anyway, college lasts maybe a year though, when my dad is kicked out. Why? Because my dad, will tell people things, even if they don’t want to hear it. He is grade A crazy and yet he’s honest, and even when people find his jokes too inappropriate, he says them anyway. So yeah, he makes some joke about giving homeless guys hand jobs and it gets him kicked out of college. He still tells me, “Alaina, you can’t tell someone to just shut the fuck up when you want them to, and that really is a problem today.”
My dad’s lawyer told him, that it wasn’t a surprise that he didn’t last in college, and that he would probably never go back, why? Because my dad is a fiction guy, and they can’t teach that, and they hate it. So there you have my father’s story up until now. Now my dad is writing a comical screenplay for adults called The Leopard, The Lynx, and The Wildcat and I’ll just warn you right now, it’s funny, but it’s funny in a dirty way. So here we are, at the end of my letter, and I’m hoping that we’ll hear from someone, whether it be any of you, or an agent or anyone, to see if you’re interested in my dad, his story, or his screenplay at all. He’s getting names of other s lined up and he’s really just hoping for some support from you guys. Seeing as he’s found you an inspiration ever since I introduced him to your music. I wish I could win a trip to Australia ,but there’s that stupid age restriction. If I could see them in concert that would make my day, but if I could see them in concert in some other country that would be freaking amazing and would remain in my memories until the day I die. I mean even though I could of seen them play during the Honda Civic Tour, I couldn’t becuz we have no money!! ugh..oh well. love you guys anyways!!!!
